Tank Farms

Various tank farms from Southern Ontario

Tank farms are one of my favourite photo topics. I’ve been shooting them for the past 5 years and never get tired of them. The light changes and redefines them each time I revisit them. They are like chameleons taking on different colours as they age, get repainted or respond to varying light of the day.

This set of tanks covers Toronto, Hamilton, Oakville, St Catharines and various other sites I’ve visited to photograph these slowly disappearing industrial symbols. Where they go I’m not certain however they must re-appear somewhere else

The world has become more oil dependant and where there were fields of these tanks many are now decommissioned and nowhere to be seen. This is true in Toronto’s portlands area which aerial photographs showed extensive tank farms during the 1940 – 1950’s

The land in Toronto’s portlands is still laden with the contamination of industrial activity and petroleum products are just one of these contaminants
