Nice Stuff. I am so glad I finally made it to that place. I think I could sit in that control room for hours. Why is it always baking hot and humid when I go to Canada?
Anyway...I dreamed about Hearn thusly:
Everyone I went with was KILLED when the entire building collapsed. I ended up standing on some little column that didnt. Like a statue on a pedastal I bake in the heat over this tragic rubble. AND the kicker is,..some DUNCE among hundreds of policemen down below READS me some sort of LEGAL NOTICE over a bullhorn while I wait for a helicopter.

Get your facts straight: The alleged murderer was not a professor. The crime was solved, although Steve T was never implicated in the church arson. It is wrong to implicate him in this article posthumously. Please do not spread rumours. It is very hurtful to friends and families.

The property is actually for sale. I have the document which outlines all the properties and the history of the place. If you think the camp is a serious waste (that has been closed for ten years) just take a look at the school on the upper level of the property. It couldn't have been used for more then five years. The problem, I guess with selling it to someone is that a large portion of the camp itself sits on a flood plain and many area are not allowed to be re-developed. I guess everything on this website shows great examples of wastefulness, neglect and greed, but not many have taken notice yet, or rather they seem to be the minority.

They say market economics are the most efficient system of resource allocation; you're saying this place has been abandoned for 10 years. Sounds like some dog is sleeping in his manger waiting for embarrassment levels to lever a better price.

It does appear to be maintained at a minimum level, i.e., someone mows the weeds. But, I'm astonished to see an outdoor pool full of water, unsupervised, open and waiting for an accidental drowning. I suppose it's posted, some lawyer's solution to the problem of neglect.

I lived in Port McNicoll in the late 50's and early 60's . I remember well the grain elevator , the CP rail freight sheds and the passenger dock for the Keewatin and the Assiniboia . Port McNicoll was a nice sleepy town to grow up in . Sad to see everything that made Port McNicoll what it was , is now gone .

Wow, thanks Scott. Are you a railway history buff, or a local? When I went there, and even online we really couldn't find anything out about when the place was even abandoned at first, probabily because its been almost a generation (30 years). Its amazing how people (especially locals) really stop noticing things in their own backyards because they see it everyday.

<a href="#comment-230" rel="nofollow">@Kiddo </a>
You are correct in identifying Port McNicoll as a village and not a hamlet, however Victoria Harbour was the original name referred to by the Georgian Bay and Seaboard Railway, a contract subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Victoria Harbour was the closest settlement in reference to the new development. CPR plans and documents from approximately 1905 until about 1910 refer to the "new C.P.R.terminal at Victoria Harbour, Ontario. The new grain elevator and railyard had also been coined "Victoria Harbour West". Railway officials soon realized that the two communities were separate and distinct and gave the development the name of Port McNicoll in 1910, after then C.P.R. vice-president David McNicoll. It was only after the arrival of the C.P.R. near Victoria Harbour in 1907, the year the Hog Bay Trestle was built to carry building supplies and eventually grain that a settlement which is now present day Port McNicoll started to take shape. The land that now encompasses the village was only settled by a few farm families prior to the arrival of the railway. Many acres that the C.P.R. eventually purchased adjacent to the manmade slip was from these farmers.

Fantastic series - as usual. You asked about others shooting the site - a couple of us recently had permission to go in and shoot the building (December 8th) for Heritage Toronto's Building Storeys 2010 exhibit that we're putting on in February. It was a blast - amazingly freezing day with sleet, water raining in on the third floor flooding it a bit, flooded basement, and gorgeous light.

Interesting, however, Port McNicoll is a village and not a hamlet. Its population is approx 1500. Victoria Harbour was not the original name of the Port McNicoll, rather it is the next village over. And if you come to Port hungry, there is a diner and restaurant to eat.
